Our annual backpack program ensures that on that important first day of school, children experiencing homelessness have a brand new backpack filled with age-appropriate school supplies.
The first backpack distribution was in 2006. Each summer, HCEF supporters gather donations of school supplies to fill thousands of backpacks. Community school supply drives often bring in additional backpacks. In August, HCEF staff and volunteers travel by school bus to deliver the stuffed backpacks to our partnering homeless housing provider agencies.
Program Outcomes 2016
- Over 2,100 backpacks were distributed to 25 homeless programs, and several schools and community organizations.
