The first question is always this one:
What space can we afford to give over to a Learning Center and Resource Library?
In one residential facility it was the lounge and TV area.
That meant some major reconfiguring:
walling off a space; adding security windows and a door.
Sometimes, however, as in a Learning Center and Resource Library recently constructed, it's just a matter of changing the function of a room. Bright colors and child-sized furniture are a good start.
Soon there will be a computer at each of the now empty workstations
as well as books and art supplies to fill shelves like these with adventure, fantasy, exploration, challenge, the world, and the neighborhood.
And that day comes:
The computers and printers are installed. The several bookcases are filled with hundreds of books. There are audio listening labs, subscriptions to on-line digital libraries and reading assessment programs, and plentiful art and craft supplies. The room is now truly a center of learning.
